Membrane separations represent a new type of unit operations which, ultimately, is expected to replace a significant proportion of conventional separation process. The advantage of membrane separation lies in their relatively low energy requirements, the reason for which is that, unlike conventional processes such as distillation, extraction & crystallisation, they generally do not feature phase transitions.
